Off Canvas Designs: How Brittany Crutcher Turned Creativity Into a Community‑Centered Design Studio

Some businesses begin with a business plan, a market analysis, or a long‑term strategy. Off Canvas Designs began with something much simpler: a love and a desire to make the moments in people’s lives feel more personal. For founder Brittany Crutcher, what started as a small creative experiment quickly grew into a thriving design studio serving weddings, brands, and special events across Chattanooga.

Crutcher’s journey began with a single intention—to make her friends’ events feel special. She started designing custom pieces as a way to add warmth, personality, and meaning to their celebrations. “Off Canvas Designs honestly started in a pretty simple way,” she says. “Just a love for creating and wanting things—and my friends’ events—to feel a little more personal.” What began as a “let me try this out” moment soon turned into something much bigger. Friends asked for pieces. Then friends of friends. Before long, Crutcher realized she had unintentionally built a business.

Creativity Meets Intention

What makes Off Canvas Designs stand out is not just the quality of the work, but the intention behind it. Crutcher approaches each project with care, curiosity, and a desire to make people feel seen. Whether she’s designing a wedding welcome sign, a branded installation, or a custom piece for a special event, she brings the same level of thoughtfulness to every detail. Her work is not mass‑produced. It’s handcrafted. It’s personal. And it’s rooted in the belief that design has the power to elevate experiences and bring people together.

Brand With Community at Its Core

While Off Canvas Designs is rooted in creativity, Crutcher’s vision extends beyond aesthetics. She hopes her business becomes a connector—something that brings people together and strengthens Chattanooga’s creative and entrepreneurial community. “I’d love for Off Canvas Designs to collaborate with other local entrepreneurs, support community events, and contribute in ways that bring people together,” she says. Her work already reflects that mission. Whether she’s designing signage for a local business, creating custom pieces for a nonprofit event, or helping a couple bring their wedding vision to life, Crutcher sees each project as an opportunity to build connection and community.

Growth Through the Business Literacy Series

Like many entrepreneurs, Crutcher reached a point where she knew creativity alone wasn’t enough—she needed structure, clarity, and a deeper understanding of the business side of her work. That’s what led her to the Chattanooga Chamber’s Business Literacy Series (BLS), a program designed to strengthen entrepreneurs’ financial and strategic skills. “Being part of BLS has really boosted my confidence,” she says. “They provided me with tools to better align myself and the business for funding opportunities, and connected me with an awesome ecosystem of entrepreneurs.” For Crutcher, the program offered more than education. It offered community, as she found herself surrounded by other business owners who were navigating similar challenges, asking similar questions, and striving for similar growth. That sense of shared experience helped her feel more grounded and more capable as a business owner.

Chattanooga’s Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

Crutcher credits Chattanooga’s business community with shaping her journey in meaningful ways. “Creating a business ecosystem was critical for me,” she explains. “Building partnerships and gaining access helped put our name in circulation.” She also emphasizes how Chattanooga’s collaborative spirit helped her avoid the long, exhausting “trial‑and‑error everything phase” that many entrepreneurs face. “We were able to skip months of figuring it out on our own,” she says. “The support here helped us move forward faster.” The ecosystem full of mentors, peers, and community partners continues to play a vital role in Off Canvas Designs’ growth.

How to Support Off Canvas Designs

Today, Off Canvas Designs has expanded far beyond what she imagined in those early days. The studio now creates thoughtful, one‑of‑a‑kind pieces for weddings, brand activations, corporate events, and milestone celebrations. Yet despite its growth, Crutcher says the heart of the business remains unchanged. “At the heart of it, it’s still the same thing,” she explains. “Thoughtful, one‑of‑a‑kind pieces made with intention and a whole lot of care.”

Crutcher invites the community to connect, collaborate, and explore what Off Canvas Designs has to offer. Supporters can learn more or place custom orders by visiting the Off Canvas Designs website, as they stay up-to-date in their social media community. Crutcher continues to welcome new partnerships, creative collaborations, and opportunities to support local events. Through Off Canvas Designs, Brittany Crutcher is not just creating beautiful pieces—she’s helping shape meaningful moments and strengthening Chattanooga’s creative landscape one project at a time.
