Dr. K with Dr. K’s Tenn Can Products

What does it take to move a product from concept to retail shelves across the region? In this episode of BuildINC Business, host Marcherie Savage talks to Cody Mays, fulfillment and warehouse manager for Dr. K’s Tenn Cans, and discusses the company’s journey to reach more than 150 retail locations.

The product, invented in Chattanooga by Curt Koontz, allows grillers to easily turn any grill into a smoker. The cans come in seven flavors and work in three simple steps: peel the label, pop the top and place the can on the grill. The result gives food a smoked flavor without the time and effort of traditional smoking methods.

Mays first discovered the product at Elder’s Ace Hardware, where his brother-in-law worked as a manager. After seeing the product in the store, Mays connected with Kuntz and quickly became involved in growing the business. Three years later, he now helps manage fulfillment and distribution as the company expands its retail presence.

Mays says joining the INCubator was a key step in scaling the business. The program provided manufacturing space, mentorship and strategic guidance that helped the company prepare for larger production and retail growth.

Beyond workspace, Mays credits the INCubator for offering education, accountability and a supportive community for entrepreneurs. As Dr. K’s Tenn Cans continues to grow, the company’s story highlights how local innovation and startup support can help small businesses expand throughout the region.
