A Look Back: the 2024 Business Literacy Series

The Chattanooga Chamber’s Business Literacy Series has rapidly become an essential resource for entrepreneurs and small business owners in the Chattanooga area.

With a focus on practical, hands-on education, the series is designed to equip businesses with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s competitive marketplace. Covering critical aspects of running a business from financial management to marketing – the initiative has quickly gained a reputation as a game-changer for participants, many of whom have praised the program for its relevance and real-world applications.

At its heart, the Business Literacy Series is structured to address the most pressing challenges small business owners face. Each session was carefully crafted to provide clear, actionable insights that participants can immediately apply to their business operations. The topics ranged from accessing capital and financial literacy to digital marketing strategies and managing a team.

Importantly, the series also emphasized inclusivity, ensuring that entrepreneurs from all backgrounds, particularly those in underserved communities, have access to resources and mentorship opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach.

One of the most impactful aspects of the series was its focus on financial literacy and business banking.

Managing finances is often one of the most daunting tasks for small business owners. Bethany Grant, lead facilitator for the series, turned complex financial concepts into accessible and actionable information. A senior consultant for Regions Bank, Grant taught business owners how to manage cash flow, build credit, secure loans and strengthen overall financial standing.

“These sessions taught me about assets and ways to secure funding I never knew was available,” said Bryant Stanfield, owner of Chattanooga Kingz Tree Service.

Another standout session – “How to Pitch Your Business” – provided participants with a roadmap for communicating their brand effectively whenever the opportunity arises, emphasizing the importance of being prepared and delivering a concise, impactful message that leads to the confidence to discuss and present their business in a variety of situations.

“This session really showed me how impactful you have to be in a short period of time,” said Jessica A. Desmond, local author and owner of JDB Publishing.

Thankfully, the Business Literacy Series also fostered a sense of community among participants. Entrepreneurs have the chance to connect with like-minded individuals, share their challenges, and build lasting relationships that extend well beyond the end of the program. This support network proves invaluable, especially for business owners who may feel isolated or overwhelmed by the demands of running their operations.

Overall, the Chattanooga Chamber’s Business Literacy Series has become a beacon of support for Chattanooga’s small business community. By focusing on key areas such as financial management, access to capital, and marketing, the program helps local entrepreneurs grow their businesses, create jobs, and contribute to the city’s vibrant economy.

Through fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment, the Chamber ensures that businesses of all sizes and backgrounds have the resources they need to succeed, thus driving sustained growth and innovation throughout the Chattanooga area.
